„Health, you are grand!” in Lublin style - the story of Lublin’s doctors

This is an attempt to present the profiles of Lublin doctors, not only those well-known to the medical community, but also those who contributed to the history of the city and its development, as well as the history of hospitals, starting from the old centuries. By the way, we will visit well-known and unknown monuments and buildings, which we will see from the other side and we will discover their former purpose and functions.

„Health, YOU ARE GRAND” in Lublin style – the story of Lublin’s doctor, Sisters of Mercy, shelters, and hospitals. We will mention the names of the patrons of our streets (e.g. Witold Chodźko, Mieczysław Biernacki, Kazimierz Jaczewski, Ludwik Hirszfeld, Tadeusz Krwawicz, Antoni Gębala), as well as figures known from other fields (e.g. Biernat from Lublin as also fluent in medical sciences, Wojciech Oczko as a doctor of 3 kings, Marek Arnsztajn as a doctor, social activist and co-founder of the Lublin society „Light”, the Vetter brothers as founders of the Infant Jesus Hospital, priest Piotr Ściegienny as chaplain of the Bonifraters hospital, Karol Rotkel, social activist, co-organizer of the Hygiene Exhibition in 1908).

There are also multicultural mentions e.g. about Marek Arnsztajn, Gustaw Haberlau, Szlomo Herszenhorn, also known as „Korczak from Lublin”.

The route is dedicated to tourists, both related to and not related to medicine, to city dwellers, as well as participants of scientific conferences often organized in Lublin (due to the existence of the Medical University), and to the environment of doctors who could be interested in such a specific knowledge of our city.

I have been a guide for 9 years. I belong to the Society of City Guides in Lublin PTTK and the Lublin Association of Pilots and Tourist Guides “Pogranicze”. I work as an academic teacher and translator. Tours are available in Polish and French. Contact with people of different ages, professions and from different parts of the world is what attracts me the most in being a guide. Also, I would like Lublin and the Lublin region to become recognizable both among the inhabitants of our country and guests from abroad. People who contributed to the history of the city are the inspiration for my walks. Famous, but also nameless… they give it character, identity and build a unique atmosphere.
